Why might it be a good idea to enable SSL/TLS?

However, some virus scanners are unable to scan your email if you enable SSL or TLS. If your virus scanner notifies you that it can’t deal with an encrypted email connection, then you should turn off SSL/TLS for the incoming email server.

Then, make sure you have configured your email program to use a secure connection for both incoming and outgoing mail.
